Hippos Go Berserk! (2000): Best Boynton Yet?

One hippo, all alone…

Oh, Sandra Boynton. All of your books are good, but every once in a while you hit the jackpot. Hippos Go Berserk!, a lively counting book with fun illustrations and the ridiculous addition of a very non-hippo character who just seems to pop out of nowhere, is absolutely one of those jackpot books; the kid took to it immediately and requests it at least three times a day, and I am perfectly happy to read it to him three times a day because it’s so much fun. Seriously, where did that blue guy even come from? And what’s he doing here? I have no idea, but he turns what would have been a good counting book into something intriguing and even funnier (without ever actually doing anything, even!) ****
